Journey to the Democratic National Convention

DAY 4, Tuesday, August 26

No way. No how. No McCain

I sat all evening in the convention hall, like many, wondering what Hillary Clinton’s approach would be towards healing and uniting our party. There was no doubt in my mind if she would do it. I knew she would. I just did not know what angle she would take.

Like a skilled boxer, Hillary emerged from the corner of the ring, swinging.  A jab here and a jab there.  Boom. She nailed a knock out.  “No way. No how. No McCain.

I felt relieved. Relieved because the nation needed to hear words to unify our party. Relieved that she said what I and many others have felt. Did people vote just for her? Were the wounds so deep that they would actually give their vote to McCain? The real question was and is, Are they Democrats or are they clothed in costume?  “Barack Obama is my candidate and he must be our president,” Hillary said.

On the ride back to the hotel, a friend expressed concern that Hillary did not say if she would have her name placed in nomination. She did not say if she would seek a formal roll call of all of the states at tonight’s convention.  In my heart, I believe we will vote and solidify Barack Obama as our presidential nominee.  Did Hillary know what she was doing by not releasing her delegates?  I do not believe it was deliberate.  I am resigned to not worry about it. It is what it is.

Acts like a duck, smells like a duck, looks like a duck…

For the people who are still reluctant to support the Obama-Biden ticket, I guess they are better off today than they were eight years ago. They are living well, driving well and eating well. They are not worried about gas prices. They are comfortable in their homes. They are paying their mortgages on time month after month. Their children attend the best of schools. They have the best health care. They are not robbing Peter to pay Paul in order to make ends meet. They are better off than eight years ago.

There you have it. They are comfortable in making the switch to vote for Bush. A vote for McCain is a vote for Bush. McCain acts like a duck, smells like a duck and he looks like a duck. He is a duck; he is a version of George W. Bush.

Unity reins

While we did not hear everything that we may have wanted to hear, it was a GREAT speech. It was a unifying speech. It was a healing speech. She did what needed to be done. She came in swinging and hit a knock out.

Comments:  Hi Doris!  I am thoroughly enjoying your blog/photos and getting a more personal view of what's going on there at the DNC.  While Hillary gave a great speech for unity, I've been hearing it was all about her like when she made her concession speech. McCain is running these ads where Hillary claims McCain is a good man and has a lot of experience, and Barack just gives a good speech (taken during the primaries). She did not mention anything that she thought Sen. Obama was capable of being President. I think the people and her supporters need to hear her make a statement like that.  Anyway, I am very excited that you and your husband are there making history and representing Michigan!   Looking forward to reading more.  Blessings!
